new river blues festOver the last 7 seasons the New River Blues Festival has presented some classic blues artists to the High Country resulting in a day of great tunes, food, drink and scenery. Always set in a beautiful location, the festival has grown into an event that delivers a memorable day of music and draws folks from across the country. This year the Blues will be flowing on Sunday, September 5th from 1 till 6pm. and the festival moves to its new home for the 8th anniversary at River House Inn on the banks of the New River, just north of Jefferson, NC.

According to organizers “This location has been called one of the prettiest on the New River and lends itself as a perfect site for some smokin’ blues music. River House Inn has become known for their unique rooms, food and hospitality. When you factor in their experience for hosting all kinds of parties and events, and their lawn that is bordered by the river, you have a great combination for presenting world-class blues in a unique setting.”

This year’s talent is stacking up to be one of the best lineups to date. With regional favorites, The King Bees (http://kingbees.home.mindspring.com), hosting the music for the day, they will be joined by some dynamic players that have left their marks on Blues music. Keyboard player and vocalist, Shrimp City Slim returns to NRBF along with special guest, harmonica player extraordinaire, Jukejoint Johnny. (www.shrimpcityslim.com) Drink Small, 77 years young, will be back at NRBF with his gutsy guitar and vocals, proving why he is a southern treasure and a member of the South Carolina Music Hall of Fame. (www.myspace.com/drinksmallblues) Newcomers to the festival this year are Ike and Val Woods out of Miami. Recently returning from a highly successful tour of Spain, this duo brings powerful vocals from Val that have been compared to Etta James and Ike’s guitar style brings elements of Jimi Hendrix and BB King, with a dash of soul, for an incredible blues sound. (www.ikeandval.com) Also Sammy Blue out of Atlanta will be on the line up this year. Taj Mahal states that Sammy “is one of the best kept secrets of roots music.” Sammy’s musicianship will fit nicely into this year’s roster of Blues originals.

Gates will open at Noon on Sunday September 5th and tickets are available, in advance, for $12 and $15 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free. Bring chairs or blankets but NO COOLERS & NO PETS. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
