Our guest rooms are all in converted farm buildings behind the main house. We’d much prefer to be less literal – to have you open a creaky old door and be surprised to find the king-size bed, the big Jacuzzi, the gas-log fireplace, the art,  the books – but since you insist…
Just down the walk from the main house, had been Dr. Ballou’s office where he saw patients and stored medical supplies in earlier days. Now we “store” books in a cabinet which formerly served as private club/speakeasy liquor lockers. Three misty watercolor nudes gracefully replace anatomy charts.
$150 Sunday-Thursday nights, $175 weekends/holidaysThe Weigh Station has a queen-size bed. All other rooms have king-size beds. No telephones, no TVs (but if you must watch that game, there is an old set in the library). And we do have broadband wireless access in the library and on the porch.
The nightly rates listed  – weekdays / weekends & holidays – are for two people and include full breakfast. Add $50 for each extra guest.  (After all, the beds are very big!) Pets are welcome if they are clean and quiet and can hold their liquor. There is a pet fee of $25 per visit. Guests are responsible for picking up their “litter.”  (Children, on the other hand, must be leashed and muzzled!)

wedding13Planning a wedding?

River House on the New River is justly famous for wedding weekends in the North Carolina mountains. Friends and family members are ensconced in guest rooms and nearby cabins. Rehearsal dinners, special brunches and recreational activities culminate in the ceremony held under the giant sycamore tree at the river’s edge.
Once the I “do”s are said, the champagne corks pop and the party begins.
After toasts and hors d’oeuvre, the wedding party and guests make their way into the white tent on the banks of the river or up to the main house for the reception.
The River House staff will take care of the bride and groom and their families, planning, advising, tending to all the details.
Part of our expertise involves networking, connecting the bride and groom to photographers, floral artists, wedding officiants, and musicians.
(We will even prepare the best North Carolina pulled pork–A High Country Bar-B-Que–for a more casual rehearsal dinner.)
Innkeeper Gayle Winston makes an awesome Chocolate Bourbon groom’s cake. It is often presented on a 3- to 6-foot board and marched through the dining room with sparklers aglow. Truly a showstopper!
Gayle’s Orange Walnut wedding cake with Grand Marnier Buttercream is not just beautiful but delicious.
River House has hosted and catered weddings of all sizes – up to 400 guests – but no fewer than two.
Your wedding guests will enjoy all of the many attractions in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the River House. We are near West Jefferson, Boone and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Read more about nearby North Carolina and Virginia attractions.

One of the fun things to do while visiting us at River House Inn is checking out Mount Jefferson State Natural Area!

Mount Jefferson rises abruptly to more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, serving as a landmark for area motorists. Acquaint yourself with this mighty peak by viewing it first from the Mount Jefferson Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rising as a long, forested prominence, its dark color is conspicuous among neighboring peaks on the Ashe plateau.

Though the mountain is magnificent from a distance, Mount Jefferson is best appreciated up close. On a clear day, you can see for miles from its peak. A great part of Ashe County spreads out below; fields, farms, forests and mountains mingle in kaleidoscopic patterns. On the horizon, the Blue Ridge Mountains form a striking backdrop.

Yet what looms in the distance is no more spectacular than what is right before your eyes, for the forests of Mount Jefferson are a botanical paradise. The interesting and unusual plant life of the park rendered it worthy of designation as a national natural landmark.

Reservations

The Weigh Station is up the hill on the left. In its former incarnation, the whole floor was a scale for weighing cattle as they arrived or exited the farm.

Like the Chicken House, it was one layer of boards with cracks you could see through.

Private and very cozy – we tell people to unpack their jammies and put the suitcase back in the car – it is the only room with a queen-size bed rather than a king.

Behind the headboard is a “crazy” quilt handmade by Gayle’s mom. There is a nifty view of the wooded hillside – beautiful when it snows!

(Should you plan to get snowed in, the refrigerator, bar sink and coffee-maker may be handy.)

$125 Sunday-Thursday nights, $150 weekends/holidays
